I originally found the Gramps project via the Gramps reddit. At the top of the page the [https://www.reddit.com/r/gramps/comments/dhimif/psa_if_you_are_using_gramps_51x_or_greater/ following] advice to convert to sqlite is given. This is likely to become a non-issue.
As the Reddit thread echoes, there was a discussion started today about removing the BSDDB backend. But their discussion has changed towards making future releases still read the old DB... but automatically convert to the new DB.
The whole process will soon become completely transparent. So there's no need to add complexity to our process.
