User Manual

Hi Garry,

Thanks for the pdf user manuals very handy.

Hope you don't mind I've renamed the pages to include the version number in the filename.

I also added a link to the pdf copy on each of the relevant manual index pages.

PS: How did you make them?

Hi Patsy, I am creating a page now describing the process to make the 4 PDF files. And instructions for others to make additionsl language variations. It does require experience with unix command line tools. The page is https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Gramps_5.1_Manual_Creation . I provide all my scripts to reproduce each file. Gary
Gary, Wonderful contribution. Hopefully the work Gioto & I are doing (checking page redirects & adding missing placeholder pages) will help with what you are doing (once we are finished I could create a csv file if you find that useful to help simplify the process? Patsy B Lefebre (talk) 07:46, 11 October 2023 (UTC) ps: sorry I forgot to reply, sometimes the grand kids keep me busy :) typically it customary on a wiki to reply on the page the question was asked so I've moved this reply back to your page.
Hi Gary, Looks interesting , thanks for doing this can it be automated on github? Gioto (talk) 22:14, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

--GaryGriffin (talk) 01:09, 8 November 2023 (UTC) Patsy, sorry I was not aware of proper place to respond. I will keep to this page. To answer about github - I dont think so. Every language takes a bit of customization and if people change redirects, it can mess things up. You can compare the scripts for the various languages and see that some take different approaches based on whether redirects or translated pages are used. And my scripts were written for running on Mac (BSD version of tools) and some of the commands may have a slight tweak to the arguments they use if they are SVR4 based.

Most of my time when running the tools is spent fixing original pages so that they will work properly (fixing header and footer mostly). The tool itself takes about a day to add a language. If I have to make changes to translated pages (which I try very hard to avoid) I need someone familiar with the language to assist. I needed this for NL but not for HE or RU. And it was only a couple expressions.

Have you completed the work with Gioto on redirects? If so, I can review to see if the manual generation process needs any updates. I have been asked to do a FR version. It is on my todo list.

My goal is to do a 5.2 manual once the documentation is ready (maybe early 2024?). That will guide me on whether the scripts have a short life or a longer one.
