Gramps considers a family unit to be a relationship between two people and potentially their offspring or dependents. This relationship could be Married, Unmarried, Civil Union, or Unknown. The two principal people are labeled as Father/partner1 and Mother/partner2. However, these can be used to handle childless couples, couples with children, or even same-sex partners. A person can have multiple partners, but each is listed in a different Family.

A Family with unknown partners can still be used for adding children which creates a sibling relationship. Blended families are characterized by at least one of the children having a non-birth relationship with a parent. Such a non-traditional relationship may be set even when the parents are unknown.

How do I add a spouse to a person?

Partners are added using the Family Editor dialog. You can bring up this dialog from two different views - the Relationship View and the Family List View.

Bringing up the Family Editor dialog from the Relationship View

To add a partner to John Smith from the Relationship View, make sure that John Smith is the active person and switch to Relationship View.

Your screen should look something like the screenshot.
Click on the Add a new family with person as parent button(Highlight in yellow above). This will bring up the Edit Family form with John Smith listed as the Father/Partner1 in the family. Had the active person been a female, the person would have been listed as the Mother/partner2 in the family. The Edit Family form is shown in the screenshot.

Once the Edit Family form is displayed, you can add the partner by clicking one of the two buttons next to the Mother/partner2. The first button will allow you to select a person who is already in the Family tree, and the second button will allow you to add a new person who is not already in the Family tree.

Alternate Method

Menubar - Add Family

You can also add a partner to a person from the Family List View. Select the Family List View, and click on the Add button in the toolbar and select the Family option. This will bring up a new Family Editor dialog with no people selected. In this case you must add both the father/Partner1 (John Smith) and the Mother/partner2.
