Your screen should look something like what is below:

Click on the {{man button|Add Partner}} button. This will bring up the Edit Family form with ''John Smith'' listed as the Father in the family. Had the active person been a female, the person would have been listed as the Mother in the family. The Edit Family form can be seen below.

Once the Edit Family form is displayed, you can add the partner by clicking one of the two buttons next to the Mother. The first button will allow you to select a person who is already in the database, and the second button will allow you to add a person who is not already in the database.
